Breast Cancer Awareness – Wear it Pink day

Thursday 6th October 2022

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month so we thought we’d take part in not only raising the profile of the cause, but raise some funds for the Breast Cancer Now charity.

We held our ‘Wear it Pink’ fundraising day on Thursday 6th October at both our head office and Rosehill foodstore.

Drum roll, please …!

We raised a whopping £837.45.

We wore pink – pictured above is our sales support team who looked fantastic in their pink gear. A special prize was awarded to Joanne Hastings who looked amazing in her tutu!

John Nee
Factory Manager

John recently celebrated over 43 years of service after joining us straight from school at the age of 16.

The early years

John started out helping our drivers deliver orders to customers. This was a job he really enjoyed as each day was different and he enjoyed the face-to-face contact with our customers across the region.

Soon, John became an apprentice butcher learning how to produce cuts of meat to ensure each carcass is as profitable as possible. Key skills he learnt during his apprenticeship were: knife skills, health & safety, profitability, seasonality and customer service.

Celebrating dedicated service

We celebrate dedicated service

We recently rewarded all our people who have worked for us for 10 years and over. Many of them were celebrating over 20, 30 and even 40 years of service!

Our new scheme involves a voucher reward and holiday enhancement, dependent upon length of service. Those celebrating working for 10 years and over qualify for the benefits.

Pictured above are just some of our Carlisle colleagues who received the benefit this year. There were many people at both our Gateshead and Harrington depots who were celebrating too.

In fact, a total of 99 of our colleagues received a long-service award this year!

We’re a Living Wage Employer

We’re committed to paying a fair wage for a day’s work

We are proud to announce that we have gained accreditation as a Living Wage Employer. Our commitment to paying a fair wage for a day’s work sees our minimum hourly rate stand at £10. This is above the National Minimum Wage and Real Living Wage rate and significantly higher than the government minimum for over 23s which currently stands at £9.50 per hour.

We are based in the north west, a region with nearly a fifth of all jobs (18.4%) paying less than the Real Living Wage – equating to around 534,000 jobs. Despite this, […]

Norman Hunter
Operations Manager

Norman joined us just over ten years ago and has seen great changes at our Gateshead depot during those years.

Norman’s time before joining our team …

Norman brings a wealth of experience and skills to his current role, obtained by working in a diverse number of roles.

For many years, he worked as a banksman for a local brewery delivering across the north east.

For a number of years, Norman enjoyed working in social care with under-privileged children on a part-time basis. This involved sleeping over and ensuring the safety of the children in his care.

Lakes College visit

On Wednesday 19th January, our butchery sales manager, John Cowen was warmly welcomed to Lakes College, Lillyhall, Workington.

He met with both Level 1 and Level 2 catering students and their tutors to give a brief overview of Pioneer Foods; our history, philosophy and service. Also, he talked about the cuts of meat we produce in our butchery by hand using highly skilled staff.

John then set the students a hands-on challenge – he asked them to produce their own recipe chicken stir fry and burgers. They needed to have the wow factor as he then judged the best recipe!

Hospitality and Catering Lecturer at the college, […]
